A winged horse takes flight on silver struck more than 2,300 years ago. This ancient Greek stater from Ambrakia brings together Pegasos and Athena, with details that reward a closer look: strands of hair beneath the goddess’s helmet, a graceful wine vessel, and a tiny bunch of grapes. I have hand set the coin in sterling silver, framing its irregular ancient shape while leaving both sides visible.
Handcrafted to Honour the Coin
Ambrakia was a Greek city in Epeiros, in northwestern Greece, founded by settlers from Corinth. Its silver coinage reflects that connection: Pegasos and the helmeted Athena also appear on the celebrated staters of its mother city. These shared designs belonged to a monetary tradition that reached across western Greece and into Italy and Sicily through the movement of silver and trade.
The pairing also has a place in Greek mythology. Athena helped the hero Bellerophon tame Pegasos by giving him a golden bridle, bringing the goddess and the winged horse together in a story familiar to the people who used these coins. Here, that monumental subject shares space with something much smaller: a wine vessel and grapes beside Athena’s portrait. It is a reminder of the care ancient engravers brought to objects made to pass from hand to hand.
