An authentic silver stater from ancient Corinth, struck with one of the most celebrated designs of the Greek world.
Few ancient coins are as instantly recognizable as the staters of Corinth. For centuries, merchants, travellers, and sailors carried these beautiful silver coins throughout the Mediterranean. Their elegant depiction of the winged horse Pegasos became one of the most enduring symbols of the ancient Greek world.
This authentic silver stater was struck in Corinth, one of antiquity's wealthiest and most influential city-states. Today, it offers a tangible connection to a civilization whose art, mythology, and ideas continue to shape our own.
Pegasos: A Symbol of Inspiration and Freedom
The obverse depicts Pegasos, the magnificent winged horse of Greek mythology, shown in flight. Born from the blood of Medusa after she was slain by Perseus, Pegasos became a symbol of divine inspiration, freedom, and the boundless possibilities of the human spirit. For over two thousand years, artists, poets, and dreamers have returned to the image of Pegasos as a reminder that imagination can lift us beyond the ordinary.
Beneath the horse appears the Corinthian letterϘ (koppa), the city's ancient civic emblem.
Athena and Hermes
The reverse portrays Athena, goddess of wisdom and strategic thought. Behind her stands Hermes, messenger of the gods, holding his caduceus and a cornucopia, symbols of commerce, prosperity, and successful exchange. Together, these figures beautifully reflect the character of ancient Corinth—a city renowned not only for its wealth and trade but also for its ingenuity and cultural influence.
Handcrafted to Honour the Coin
This authentic Corinthian stater has been carefully set by hand in a handcrafted 14k gold bezel, designed to protect the ancient coin while allowing its remarkable artistry to remain the centre of attention. Every setting is individually crafted to complement the character of the coin rather than compete with it, ensuring that the history remains the focal point.
The History
Curator's Note
The Pegasos staters have always been among my favourite Greek coins. Their design is both graceful and instantly recognizable, yet their appeal goes far beyond their beauty.
Whenever I show one to someone, I'm reminded that the Greeks rarely chose images at random. Pegasos speaks of aspiration, Athena of wisdom, and Hermes of communication and commerce. Together they capture something timeless: the idea that imagination, thoughtful judgment, and enterprise are strongest when they work together. It is one of those rare ancient coins whose symbolism feels just as relevant today as it did over two thousand years ago.
