A silver stater from the Greek city of Anaktorion, struck during the height of the Classical Greek world and preserved in a hand fabricated 14k gold setting. The coin carries one of antiquity’s most enduring designs: Pegasus in flight and Athena in her Corinthian helmet, imagery rooted in myth, warfare, and the prestige of Corinthian trade coinage.
Struck more than 2,300 years ago by hand between engraved dies, each example bears the subtle irregularities and force of ancient production. The surfaces remain fully visible within the setting, allowing the original artistry and relief to remain the focus.
The History
Anaktorion was a Greek city in western Akarnania, positioned along important maritime routes connecting mainland Greece with the Ionian world. Like many cities in the region, it adopted the celebrated Pegasus coinage tradition associated with Corinth, whose staters became one of the most recognizable trade currencies of the ancient Mediterranean.
Pegasos, the winged horse born from the blood of Medusa, represented speed, divine favor, and heroic myth. His image spread across the Greek world through Corinthian coinage, eventually becoming a symbol not only of mythology, but of commercial trust and political identity. On the reverse appears Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, wearing the distinctive Corinthian helmet that became synonymous with Greek hoplite warfare.
The pairing of Pegasus and Athena created one of antiquity’s most balanced coin designs: movement and restraint, myth and strategy, power and intellect. Even after centuries beneath the earth, the imagery remains remarkably immediate.
