During the second century BC, Pergamon stood among the great cities of the Hellenistic world. A center of learning, art, and royal patronage, it rivaled Alexandria and Athens in wealth and cultural influence. It was here that the cistophoric tetradrachm was introduced, becoming one of the principal silver coins of western Asia Minor.

The obverse depicts a cista mystica, a sacred basket used in the rites of Dionysus, partially opened to reveal a serpent within. To participants in the mysteries, the cista represented hidden knowledge and religious initiation. Encircling the basket is a wreath of ivy, the sacred plant of Dionysus.

The reverse continues the theme with two serpents entwined around a bowcase, accompanied by a thyrsos, the staff traditionally carried by Dionysus and his followers. Together, these symbols transformed an everyday coin into a reminder of one of the ancient world's most enduring religious traditions. That is what drew me to this coin.

Unlike portraits of kings or emperors, this design invites questions. It speaks not of political power, but of belief, ritual, and mystery. More than two thousand years after it was struck, its symbolism remains every bit as compelling.
