Pairs well with
A remarkably detailed portrait of Marcus Aurelius is the centerpiece of this ancient silver denarius, struck in Rome around AD 176. On the reverse stands Felicitas, the Roman personification of good fortune and prosperity, holding a caduceus and cornucopia. The exact coin pictured will be hand set in a handmade bezel in your choice of metal, with both sides left visible.
Why I Chose This Coin
I chose this coin for the remarkable detail preserved in Marcus Aurelius’s portrait. When selecting a portrait coin, I look for an example that makes you want to study the face, and this one immediately caught my attention. The surviving detail gives the emperor a strong presence within a very small piece of silver, making the portrait a natural focal point for the pendant.
The Story
Marcus Aurelius is remembered for the Meditations, his reflections on duty, judgment, and how to live well. This denarius belongs to the later years of his reign. His laureate portrait is accompanied by the titles GERM and SARM, referring to victories over Germanic peoples and the Sarmatians.
On the reverse, Felicitas expresses the promise of good fortune and prosperity. Her cornucopia represents abundance, while the caduceus is associated with commerce and peaceful exchange. Together, the two sides present the emperor and the conditions his rule was intended to secure. It is a small work of Roman portraiture that also preserves the public language of his government.

Learn More
Every coin in this collection is individually selected for its historical significance, artistry, and character. Because each pendant is made from an authentic ancient coin, no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
More photographs and the complete numismatic description are available upon request. Each pendant is handcrafted to order and made using the exact coin shown in the listing.
Handcrafted Setting
Your setting is made only after your order is placed, ensuring it is fitted specifically to this exact coin. Because ancient coins are hand-struck, the obverse and reverse are rarely aligned like modern coins. If you have a preferred side to face forward when worn, simply leave a note with your order and I'll orient the setting accordingly.
