Pairs well with
An irregular piece of ancient silver gives this Marcus Aurelius denarius its distinctive silhouette. Struck in Rome in AD 164, the coin pairs the laureate portrait of the philosopher-emperor with Felicitas, the Roman personification of good fortune and prosperity. Your pendant will be made using the exact coin pictured, with a handmade bezel fitted to its individual contours and both sides left visible.
Why I Chose This Coin
I chose this coin for its irregular shape. I’m often drawn to ancient coins whose outlines have as much character as their portraits, and this example has that appeal. Its uneven contours make it particularly interesting to set: the bezel follows the shape of the silver, giving the finished pendant a form specific to this coin.
The Story
Marcus Aurelius is remembered as both a Roman emperor and the author of the Meditations, his reflections on duty, self-discipline, and human nature. This denarius dates to the early years of his reign, placing his portrait on an object made to circulate through the Roman world as money.
On the reverse stands Felicitas, the personification of good fortune and prosperity. Her cornucopia represents abundance, while the caduceus evokes commerce and peaceful exchange. Together, the emperor’s portrait and this image express the connection Roman coinage drew between imperial rule and public well-being.

Learn More
Every coin in this collection is individually selected for its historical significance, artistry, and character. Because each pendant is made from an authentic ancient coin, no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
More photographs and the complete numismatic description are available upon request. Each pendant is handcrafted to order and made using the exact coin shown in the listing.
Handcrafted Setting
Your setting is made only after your order is placed, ensuring it is fitted specifically to this exact coin. Because ancient coins are hand-struck, the obverse and reverse are rarely aligned like modern coins. If you have a preferred side to face forward when worn, simply leave a note with your order and I'll orient the setting accordingly.
