This Exact Ancient Coin • Your Choice of Handcrafted Setting
Struck over 2,400 years ago on the Thracian Cherronesos, this authentic silver hemidrachm represents one of the classic coin types of ancient Greece. Its bold lion and distinctive quadripartite reverse have made it a favorite among collectors for generations.
I selected this particular coin because it features a charming salamander within the reverse incuse, a detail I have rarely encountered despite owning many examples of this type. Combined with its pleasing strike and attractive appearance, it makes this coin especially memorable.
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive. After purchase, I will handcraft a custom bezel in brass, sterling silver, 14k gold, 18k gold, or 22k gold specifically for this coin, preserving its unique shape while creating a timeless piece that can be worn every day.
Why I Chose This Coin
I've owned many Cherronesos hemidrachms over the years, but very few featured the small salamander hidden within the reverse design. That subtle detail immediately caught my attention and made this example stand out from the rest.
The bold lion on the obverse pairs beautifully with the geometric reverse, creating a coin that is both elegant and unmistakably Greek. It is a wonderful example of how even the smallest details can make an ancient coin completely unique.
The Story
The Thracian Cherronesos, today known as the Gallipoli Peninsula, occupied a strategically important position controlling the entrance to the Hellespont. Its silver coinage circulated widely throughout the Greek world during the Classical period.
The obverse depicts a lion turning back over its shoulder, a symbol associated with strength and vigilance. The reverse consists of a quadripartite incuse square, a characteristic design of the region. On this example, one compartment contains a small salamander, a fascinating control symbol that distinguishes it from many other coins of the series.
More than 2,400 years later, this silver hemidrachm remains a beautiful survivor of the Classical Greek world.
