By the Roman period, ancient writers believed the plant had vanished forever. Whether lost through overharvesting, environmental change, or some combination of the two, silphium became one of history's greatest botanical mysteries. Today, its most enduring image survives not in nature, but on coins like this one.

That is what drew me to this coin. Every ancient coin carries history, but this one preserves something far rarer than the portrait of a ruler. It preserves the memory of an entire species that shaped the identity and prosperity of an ancient civilization.

The obverse depicts Karneios, a local form of Apollo worshipped in Cyrenaica, shown with the horn of Ammon, reflecting the unique blend of Greek and North African traditions that defined the region during the fourth century BC. The reverse, however, is the true heart of the coin. The elegant stalk of silphium, carefully engraved by a die cutter more than twenty-three centuries ago, remains one of the finest surviving records of the legendary plant.

I chose to set this coin in a simple sterling silver bracelet so that nothing competes with it. The setting protects the coin while allowing its history to remain the focus. Every mark, every detail, and every imperfection belongs to an object that has already travelled through countless hands before arriving in my workshop.
