The Story
Seleukos I Nikator was one of Alexander the Great's most accomplished generals. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, he emerged victorious in the struggles that followed and established the Seleucid Empire, stretching from Asia Minor to the borders of India.
Although these coins bear the name of Seleukos, they deliberately preserve the famous imagery introduced under Alexander. The portrait of Herakles symbolized heroic strength, while Zeus, seated on his throne, represented divine authority and kingship. By continuing these designs, Seleukos emphasized both continuity and legitimacy in the newly formed Hellenistic world.
More than 2,300 years later, this same coin survives as a tangible connection to one of history's most transformative eras.
