This Exact Ancient Coin • Your Choice of Handcrafted Setting
Struck during the reign of Emperor Domitian between AD 90 and 91, this authentic Roman bronze quadrans offers a glimpse into everyday life in the Roman Empire. While gold and silver coins served larger transactions, bronze denominations like this passed through the hands of ordinary Romans nearly two thousand years ago.
I selected this particular coin for its beautiful deep green patina and the striking reverse depicting a raven perched on a laurel branch above the letters SC. Combined with the unusual portrait of Apollo bearing the unmistakable features of Domitian himself, it is a coin full of character and symbolism.
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive. After purchase, I will handcraft a custom bezel in brass, sterling silver, 14k gold, 18k gold, or 22k gold specifically for this coin, preserving its unique shape while creating a timeless piece that can be worn every day.
Why I Chose This Coin
This coin immediately stood out because of its rich, dark green patina, developed naturally over nearly two thousand years. The surfaces have a depth and warmth that only ancient bronze can acquire.
The reverse is particularly compelling, showing a raven perched on a laurel branch above the letters SC, a wonderfully distinctive design that is rarely encountered on Roman coinage. The obverse is equally fascinating, depicting Apollo while subtly giving the god the facial features of Emperor Domitian, blending mythology with imperial propaganda in a uniquely Roman way.
The Story
Domitian ruled the Roman Empire from AD 81 to 96, a period marked by military success, ambitious building projects, and increasingly autocratic rule. Although remembered as a controversial emperor, his reign brought stability and prosperity to much of the empire.
This quadrans reflects the artistic and political messaging of the period. Rather than portraying Domitian directly, the obverse depicts Apollo, one of the emperor's favored deities, with facial features closely resembling the emperor himself. The reverse features a raven resting on a laurel branch above SC, standing for Senatus Consulto, indicating that the coinage was issued by authority of the Roman Senate.
Today, the combination of unusual iconography, imperial symbolism, and beautiful ancient patina makes this one of the more distinctive bronze coins of the Flavian dynasty.
