Trajan was remembered by the Romans as the greatest emperor who ever ruled. Struck during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this Roman silver denarius celebrates the authority and prestige of one of Rome’s greatest rulers. The reverse depicts the personification of Roma herself, standing with Victory in hand, presenting a powerful image of the Roman state triumphant and enduring.
Set in a handcrafted bezel, the ancient coin is preserved as both historical artifact and wearable object. Nearly two thousand years after it first circulated in the Roman Empire, it continues its journey as a small piece of history carried forward.
The History
Marcus Ulpius Traianus, known to history as Trajan, ruled the Roman Empire from AD 98 to 117. His reign marked one of the high points of Roman power and territorial expansion. Under his leadership Rome reached its greatest geographic extent, with successful campaigns in Dacia and the East bringing immense wealth and prestige to the empire.
Trajan was widely admired by both the Senate and the Roman people. Later generations remembered him as the ideal emperor, and the title Optimus Princeps, meaning the best of rulers, became permanently associated with his name. The reverse legend on this coin reflects that reputation, proclaiming him as the “best of princes” honored by the Senate and the Roman people.
The figure on the reverse represents Roma, the personification of the city and the Roman state itself. Holding the winged figure of Victory, Roma embodies the military success and stability that defined Trajan’s reign. Through this imagery, the coin connects the emperor’s authority directly with the enduring power of Rome.
The symbolism of Roma has endured for centuries. As historian Ronald Mellor observed, the figure of Roma has served as one of the longest lasting political and religious symbols in Western civilization, representing the power, ideals, and cultural legacy of the Roman world.
