This bronze Æ Unit was struck under Alexander the Great, whose conquests reshaped the ancient world from Greece to India. The obverse shows Herakles, Alexander’s heroic ancestor, wearing the lion-skin of the Nemean lion — a timeless emblem of strength and divine favor. The reverse depicts bow, club, and quiver, flanked by grape clusters and a delta mark, merging martial readiness with local symbolism.
Now hand-set in solid sterling silver, the coin’s soft patina and rugged surfaces become a wearable tribute to myth, might, and memory.
The History
Alexander the Great deliberately aligned himself with Herakles, wearing the lion-skin in art and coinage to project divine lineage and heroic strength. The bow and club were Herakles’ weapons, while grape imagery reflected both Dionysian cults and Macedonian identity.
These bronze units circulated alongside Alexander’s silver and gold coinage, giving everyday soldiers and citizens access to the imagery of empire. Even in their smaller form, they reinforced loyalty to the king and his mythic ancestry.
