Struck in 38 BC, this large bronze issue brings together two figures at the foundation of the Roman Empire. Octavian appears as a young ruler in the making, while the reverse presents the deified Julius Caesar, linking political power to legacy and memory.
The surfaces show honest wear, with areas of porosity and adjustment marks, yet the portraits remain clear. The pairing of these two figures gives the coin a presence that extends beyond condition alone
The History
This coin belongs to the period of the Second Triumvirate, when Octavian, Mark Antony, and Lepidus held power in the aftermath of Julius Caesar’s assassination. Authority during these years was not yet settled, and imagery played a crucial role in shaping legitimacy.
The presence of Divus Julius Caesar is central. After his deification, Caesar became a powerful symbol, and Octavian used this association to strengthen his own position. By placing himself alongside the deified Caesar, he presented his authority as both inherited and sanctioned.
The youthful portrait of Octavian reflects a ruler still consolidating power, not yet the Augustus he would become. Coins like this circulated in a world where the future of Rome was uncertain, carrying with them the visual argument that continuity from Caesar to Octavian was both natural and necessary.
Despite its wear, the coin preserves this moment clearly. It is not simply a piece of currency, but a direct link to the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Empire
