This pendant features a genuine silver denarius struck under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus between AD 194–195. The obverse bears his laureate portrait, while the reverse presents one of the most poetic celestial designs of the Roman world: seven stars suspended above a crescent moon beneath the inscription SAECVL FELICIT — “An Age of Good Fortune.”

Struck at Emesa in Roman Syria during the early years of Severus’s reign, the coin reflects a moment of imperial consolidation after civil war and uncertainty. The celestial imagery evokes cosmic order, renewal, and divine favor, transforming a small silver coin into a meditation on fortune and permanence. More than eighteen centuries later, the design retains an almost modern sense of quiet mystery.
Hand set in a solid 14k gold bezel, the coin’s dark silver surfaces and luminous celestial reverse create a striking contrast between ancient imagery and warm gold
The History
Septimius Severus rose to power during one of the most turbulent periods in Roman history. Following the assassination of Commodus and the collapse of political stability in AD 193, several generals competed for the imperial throne in what became known as the Year of the Five Emperors. Severus ultimately emerged victorious, establishing a new dynasty that would rule Rome for decades.
This denarius belongs to the opening years of that reign. Rather than emphasizing military conquest alone, the reverse invokes celestial harmony and the promise of prosperity restored to the empire. The phrase Saeculi Felicitas translates roughly to “the happiness of the age” or “the good fortune of the era,” presenting Severus as the restorer of cosmic and political order after chaos.
The seven stars and crescent likely carried both Roman and eastern associations. Struck in Emesa, a city deeply connected to local solar and astral cults, the imagery reflects a blending of Roman imperial propaganda with the spiritual symbolism of the eastern provinces. The result is among the most elegant and atmospheric reverse types of the Severan period.
Today, the coin survives not merely as currency, but as a small fragment of the ancient night sky — preserved in silver and reframed in gold.
