A rare and powerful work of early Classical artistry. This is the first Sicilian tetradrachm I have ever set in 18k gold, and it is a truly one of a kind piece. A heavy, beautifully engraved coin that captures the grandeur of ancient Syracuse, preserved in a custom handmade bezel fit for a museum grade artifact.
The History
• Early Classical Sicily produced some of the finest coinage in the ancient world. Syracuse, in particular, became famous for its master engravers, its athletic festivals, and its dominance over the surrounding seas.
• The obverse scene shows a charioteer guiding a quadriga in a slow and deliberate procession. Above them, Nike flies forward to crown the team, creating a dialogue between mortal discipline and divine recognition. These images likely allude to Syracusan victories in Panhellenic games, a major source of civic pride.
• On the reverse appears Arethusa, the nymph who fled from Arcadia and was transformed into the freshwater spring on the island of Ortygia. Her presence symbolizes purity, vitality, and the lifeblood of the city itself. The four dolphins encircling her represent Syracuse’s maritime identity and the life surrounding the harbor.
• Coins of this era mark a turning point in Greek numismatic art. The engravers of early Syracuse created portraits and compositions that influenced the rest of the Greek world for generations. This piece belongs to that foundational age.
• The coin’s provenance adds distinction. It appeared in the Superior Galleries auction of December 1990, and it was previously certified in an NGC holder, confirming its authenticity and pedigree.

The Athenian Owl pendants are awesome! We're saving the gift for a special occasion. My wife loved it, she got it and was all hushed quiet, that smile while opening and handling it for the first few minutes. It's special.
