This pendant features a genuine bronze prutah struck under Herod Archelaus, ethnarch of Samaria, Judea, and Idumea following the death of Herod the Great. The obverse depicts a bunch of grapes on the vine, while the reverse shows a helmet with crest and cheek straps, accompanied by a caduceus.
Though worn, the coin retains its essential detail and displays an attractive green patina—an ancient surface that formed over nearly 2,000 years. It has been set in a minimalist 18k gold bezel, hand-shaped to secure the coin while leaving its character and irregular contours intact.
The History
Herod Archelaus ruled from 4 BCE until 6 CE, when he was deposed by the Roman emperor Augustus for misrule. His coinage is among the few issues from Judea to feature non-figural imagery, in accordance with Jewish traditions avoiding human likenesses. The grape cluster symbolized agricultural prosperity, while the helmet represented military authority under Rome’s oversight.
Although Archelaus’ reign was short-lived, his coins remain valued as historical witnesses to the turbulent transition from the Herodian dynasty to direct Roman governance. Their worn surfaces tell of wide circulation in daily commerce throughout Judea.
