Struck in Amisos in the Pontic Kingdom between 100–85 BC, this substantial bronze bears the helmeted head of Ares, god of war, facing right in a crested helmet, while the reverse presents a sword resting firmly within its sheath beside the civic inscription AMI-ΣOY. The message is deliberate and restrained: strength present, but governed. Hand set in a sterling silver frame and intentionally crafted without a bail, this piece is designed not as ornament but as a pocket companion — a relic of resolve meant to be carried and handled.
The History
Amisos, situated on the southern shore of the Black Sea, was one of the most important cities of the Pontic Kingdom under Mithradates VI Eupator. Known as one of Rome’s fiercest enemies, Mithradates consolidated power through military campaigns and the rich symbolism of his coinage. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, protection, and strategy, appeared frequently on his coins as a divine patron of the city. The reverse—depicting a sheathed sword beneath a star and crescent—was both a statement of vigilance and a celestial emblem of power, reinforcing Amisos’s identity as a stronghold of Hellenistic culture and Pontic pride.
