Struck in the years following the death of Constantine I, this small bronze coin bears one of the most enduring images of the ancient world: the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome. Compact in scale yet instantly recognizable, the design connects the viewer directly to Rome’s mythic origins, a story that continued to define the empire even in its final centuries. Additional photographs will be added shortly; the third image shown is of a similar coin placed beside a U.S. quarter to give a sense of size.
The History
In the early 4th century AD, the Roman Empire stood at a turning point. Constantine the Great had reunited a fractured realm and begun a profound transformation of imperial identity, most notably through his support of Christianity. After his death in AD 337, a series of commemorative coinages were issued across the empire, reflecting both continuity and change.
Among the most evocative of these is the image of the she-wolf nursing the twins Romulus and Remus. According to Roman tradition, the twins were the sons of Mars, abandoned at birth and saved by the wolf who nursed them. Romulus would go on to found the city of Rome itself. For centuries, this scene served as a powerful symbol of Rome’s origins, resilience, and divine favor.
Its appearance on coinage of this period is deliberate. Even as the empire embraced new religious and political realities, it continued to anchor itself in its foundational myths. The image of the wolf and twins offered something timeless and unifying, a reminder that Rome’s authority stretched back to legendary beginnings.
Struck nearly three centuries after the height of the early Empire, this coin captures that moment of reflection. It is both backward-looking and forward-facing, preserving the story of Rome’s birth while circulating in a world that was rapidly becoming something new.
