Amisos Medusa Gorgon Pendant | Aegis and Nike in Sterling Silver
Pairs well with
Struck in the ancient city of Amisos, this bronze coin carries one of the most arresting images in Greek coinage: the Gorgoneion, a protective emblem set at the center of an aegis. Compact in scale yet rich in detail, the coin has a satisfying weight and presence, shaped by centuries of circulation.
Set in a sterling silver bezel, the dark bronze surface is framed with clarity, allowing the central image to remain the focus. The result is a piece defined by contrast, both in material and in meaning.
The History
Amisos was a prominent city on the southern coast of the Black Sea, flourishing during the Hellenistic period under the influence of the Kingdom of Pontos. Its coinage reflects a blend of Greek artistic tradition and local identity, often emphasizing protective and victorious themes.
The obverse features the Gorgoneion, the head of Medusa, placed at the center of an aegis. In Greek mythology, the Gorgon’s gaze was believed to turn enemies to stone, and her image was widely used as a protective symbol. Mounted on the aegis, the legendary shield associated with Zeus and Athena, it became a powerful emblem of defense and divine protection.
On the reverse, Nike, the goddess of victory, moves forward with a palm branch, a traditional symbol of triumph. Together, the two sides present a unified message: protection and victory, defense and success, rendered in a form meant to circulate through daily life in the ancient world.
Coins like this were not simply currency. They carried meaning, identity, and belief, passing from hand to hand across centuries.
