Struck in Wasit in 120 AH (737 CE) during the reign of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, this silver dirham embodies the refined austerity of early Islamic coinage. Unlike figural Roman and Greek types, Umayyad silver presents its authority through inscription alone — declarations of faith rendered in elegant Kufic script. This example displays exceptional preservation and a warm pink-silver toning across its surface, giving the coin remarkable depth and character. Now elevated in a hand-crafted sterling silver prong setting, the dirham appears suspended within its frame, allowing the calligraphy to remain uninterrupted and fully legible.

The History
This dirham was struck in Wasit — whose name means “middle” in Arabic — a city strategically located between Kufa and Basra in present-day Iraq. Founded in the late 7th century, Wasit became an important administrative and military center under the Umayyads.
The inscriptions proclaim the central tenets of Islamic faith. The obverse declares the shahada: “There is no God except Allah. He is alone. There is no partner to Him,” along with the mint and date. The reverse includes Surah 112, affirming divine unity, and part of Surah 9:33, emphasizing the mission of the Prophet Muhammad. In contrast to earlier imperial portraiture, authority here is expressed through sacred text — sovereignty articulated through belief rather than image.
Today, Umayyad dirhams are admired for their disciplined beauty and historical significance, marking a transformative moment in monetary and religious history
