Struck during the height of the Second Punic War, this large bronze coin belongs to a moment when Rome was fighting for survival against Carthage. Issued in southern Italy, the piece reflects the practical and symbolic language of early Roman Republican coinage, where imagery conveyed strength, vigilance, and naval power.
Broad in scale and direct in design, it preserves the character of Roman bronze money at a time when function and authority mattered more than refinement.
The History
This bronze coin was issued during one of the most dangerous periods in Rome’s early history. As Hannibal’s armies moved through Italy, the Roman state mobilized its resources on an unprecedented scale. Bronze coinage formed the backbone of daily transactions, circulating among soldiers, merchants, and civilians alike.
The obverse depicts Minerva, goddess of wisdom, strategy, and warfare. Her helmeted head symbolized disciplined defense and intelligent command, qualities Rome needed desperately during the war years. The pellets above her head functioned as value marks, reflecting a monetary system still closely tied to weight and denomination rather than portraiture.
The reverse shows the prow of a Roman warship, a powerful emblem of naval dominance and logistical strength. Control of the seas was essential to Rome’s eventual victory, and the prow type became one of the most enduring images in Republican coinage. The legend ROMA asserts state authority, while the additional marks identify the issue within a broader system of wartime production.
This coin retains the irregular surfaces and edges characteristic of early Roman bronze, features preserved and visible within the prong setting. These physical qualities underscore its role as utilitarian money, cast and struck in a period when Rome’s future was far from assured.
