Hand set in sterling silver, this Roman bronze preserves the softened features of an imperial empress on one side and a bird standing between S C on the other. Struck nearly two millennia ago, it once passed through the markets and military roads of the Roman world before finding new life as wearable history.
The History
Though heavily worn from circulation, the coin retains the essential dignity of Roman imperial portraiture. The empress is shown in profile, her hair drawn upward in the elaborate coiffure typical of the Antonine and Severan courts. Even in softened relief, the form conveys presence — authority rendered in metal.
The reverse features a standing bird flanked by the letters S C, an abbreviation of Senatus Consulto — “by decree of the Senate.” These letters appear on Roman bronze issues and affirm that the coinage was struck with senatorial approval.
The bird, likely an eagle, symbolized Jupiter, imperial power, and divine favor. In Roman thought, the eagle also signified apotheosis — the soul rising toward the heavens. Whether as emblem of empire or marker of eternity, the imagery speaks to Rome’s fusion of political and cosmic order.
