Silver Antoninianus | Set in Sterling Silver with Chain
This silver antoninianus was struck in memory of Diva Mariniana, wife of Emperor Valerian and mother of Gallienus. Following her death, Mariniana was elevated to divine status by imperial decree, and this coin commemorates her celestial ascension. The obverse shows her veiled bust set on a crescent, crowned with a stephane, while the reverse depicts a peacock — the traditional Roman symbol of immortality and consecration.
Now set in a hand-forged sterling silver bezel, the coin becomes a rare and timeless pendant — a wearable tribute to memory, legacy, and eternal honor.
The History
Roman empresses were not only companions to emperors but also embodiments of dynastic continuity. Upon their deaths, select women of the imperial household were formally deified, joining the ranks of the divinized. Mariniana’s consecration linked her to the celestial and eternal, projecting divine legitimacy onto her husband Valerian and her son Gallienus.
The peacock on the reverse was a powerful funerary emblem, representing the soul’s ascent to the heavens and divine immortality. To wear this coin today is to carry a symbol of resilience, memory, and Rome’s vision of eternity.
