This pendant features a luminous sestertius of Severus Alexander, struck at the Rome mint in the early third century CE. Cast in orichalcum—a golden bronze alloy reserved for Rome’s most prestigious coinage—it carries both the emperor’s portrait and the personification of Providentia.
On the obverse, the young emperor appears radiate, his bust draped in classical style. On the reverse, Providentia, goddess of foresight, stands with corn-ears, a modius, and a cornucopia, embodying abundance, stability, and the divine guidance Rome desperately sought in its final years of peace.
The History
Severus Alexander ascended the throne at just 13, becoming the last emperor of the Severan dynasty. His reign sought moderation and virtue, but ended with his assassination in AD 235, sparking the Crisis of the Third Century. The reverse image of Providentia reflects Rome’s reliance on foresight, planning, and divine favor during its final years of stability. Cast in orichalcum, a golden-bronze alloy used for high-value coinage, this sestertius glows with the prestige and ambition of late Imperial Rome
