An authentic silver denarius struck in the late Roman Republic by the moneyer Petillius Capitolinus. The obverse features the bearded head of Jupiter, king of the gods, while the reverse depicts the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus with remarkable architectural detail — garlands strung between its columns, and figures placed on the roof and architrave. Scarcer than most Republican issues, this coin is both a tribute to Rome’s chief deity and a rare architectural type that links the wearer to the sacred heart of the Republic
The History
Struck in 43 BC, during the turbulence following Julius Caesar’s assassination, this issue celebrated Jupiter Capitolinus, Rome’s supreme deity and protector of the state. The temple dedicated to him stood on the Capitoline Hill, the symbolic heart of Roman religion and authority.
By placing this monument on his coinage, Petillius Capitolinus reinforced both the sanctity of Jupiter and the prestige of Rome itself. Surviving examples of this type are treasured for their rarity and artistry, standing apart within Republican coinage.
