This genuine Athenian Owl tetradrachm, struck in Athens between 440 and 404 BCE, represents the height of Classical Greek coinage. Revered for its purity and striking imagery, it was the most trusted silver coin of the ancient Mediterranean. Hand-set in a solid 18k gold bezel, the pendant was offered with a matching 14k gold chain and a custom presentation.
The History
The Athenian tetradrachm—known as the “owl”—was more than currency. Minted during the Golden Age of Athens under Pericles, it symbolized wisdom, commerce, and civic pride. Its obverse depicts Athena, patron goddess of the city, resolute and serene in her crested helmet. The reverse shows her owl, flanked by a crescent moon and olive sprig, an image of vigilance and prosperity.
Athens’ coinage became the dominant standard across the Aegean and beyond, enabling trade and financing monumental works such as the Parthenon. To hold one today is to touch the silver that once built empires and carried ideas across seas. Read more about this remarkable coin here.
