Struck in Cochin in South India between the 17th and 18th centuries, this genuine gold fanam is among the smallest circulating coins ever produced. Despite its diminutive size, the coin carried meaningful economic weight in the kingdom of Travancore, in present-day Kerala. One side bears a stylized boar formed from dotted lines, while the reverse shows a lion (sardula) crowned by a crescent — symbols associated with strength, protection, and divine sanction.
Now set in a thick sterling silver ring, the tiny high-purity gold coin appears almost suspended within its bold frame. The contrast between the warm gold and substantial silver band creates a striking balance of delicacy and strength.
This coin was acquired from a reputable ancient coin dealer and is guaranteed authentic.
The History
Fanams were some of the tiniest gold coins ever minted, yet they played a crucial role in South Indian trade for centuries. Circulating widely in the spice-rich coastal markets of Kerala, they became symbols of both economic stability and sacred imagery. The boar and lion designs reflect a long tradition of animal symbolism in Indian art, embodying fertility, protection, and kingship. Their miniature size belied their cultural power, making them treasured both in commerce and ritual.
