Neapolis, Campania | Silver Didrachm | Struck c. 320–300 BC | Set in Sterling Silver with Chain
This silver didrachm was struck in Neapolis (modern Naples), a Greek colony on the Bay of Naples, more than 2,300 years ago. The obverse shows a nymph adorned with jewelry and a grape bunch, evoking the vineyards and Dionysian traditions of the region. The reverse depicts a powerful man-headed bull — symbol of local river gods — crowned by Nike, goddess of victory.
Now framed in a hand-crafted sterling silver bezel, the coin is preserved as a unique, wearable artifact of Greek Italy’s cultural and spiritual life.
The History
Neapolis was one of the great crossroads of the ancient Mediterranean, where Greek colonists brought their art and religion to Southern Italy. This coin was struck during the early years of Rome’s alliance with Greek cities in the region, when Neapolis’ vineyards and festivals became symbols of its prosperity.
The man-headed bull, crowned by Nike, represented the union of divine power, natural fertility, and civic pride. Its bold imagery marked Neapolis as both deeply rooted in Greek tradition and open to the influence of Rome.
