This silver denarius was struck during the turbulent final century of the Roman Republic by the moneyer Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus. On the obverse, Mars, god of war, is shown in a Corinthian helmet, viewed from behind — a rare and unusually dynamic pose in Roman coinage. The reverse depicts Victory driving a biga (two-horse chariot), a motif proclaiming triumph and divine favor in war.
Now set in a custom sterling silver bezel, the coin’s worn yet legible surfaces carry the marks of circulation while preserving its bold imagery — a testament to conflict, courage, and the resilience of Rome.
The History
The late Republic was defined by political violence, personal ambition, and recurring civil wars. Moneyers like Lentulus Clodianus issued coinage that often carried political messages or emphasized Rome’s divine patrons.
Mars, shown here in a striking rear-facing pose, underscores the Republic’s reliance on military power and martial virtue. The reverse image of Victory in her swift chariot reinforced Rome’s claim to divine sanction and the inevitability of its triumphs, even as the Republic itself edged toward collapse.
