This silver drachm was struck under Antiochos III, called “the Great,” one of the most ambitious rulers of the Hellenistic world. The obverse shows the diademed head of the king in refined Hellenistic style, an idealized portrait of royal authority. On the reverse, a powerful elephant strides forward, accompanied by the inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ (“of King Antiochos”).
Struck in Apameia on the Orontes — a strategic Seleukid stronghold in modern Syria — the coin embodies both the vast reach of Antiochos’ empire and the exotic strength of war elephants, which featured prominently in his campaigns from Asia Minor to India. Now set in a custom sterling silver bezel, it becomes a wearable relic of Hellenistic ambition and power.
The History
Antiochos III ruled over one of the largest Hellenistic kingdoms, stretching from the Aegean to the frontiers of India. His reign marked both a peak of Seleukid power and the beginning of its struggles against Rome.
The war elephant, long associated with eastern conquest, symbolized the exotic might that Antiochos wielded in his campaigns. By placing this image on his coinage, he proclaimed not only his military reach but also his claim to rule as a successor to Alexander’s vision of empire. Coins like this conveyed authority across distant lands, binding together diverse peoples under one crown
