This pendant features a genuine bronze coin of Antiochus I Soter, first king of the Seleucid Empire, struck at Antioch between 280 and 261 BC. The obverse shows a Macedonian shield with anchor at its center, while the reverse depicts a horned elephant walking right, framed by the inscription of Antiochus’ name.
Set in a thick, hand-forged sterling silver bezel with a bold bail, the pendant emphasizes both durability and presence. Though somewhat worn, the designs remain powerful, preserving the imagery of one of antiquity’s great empires.
The History
Antiochus I (reigned 281–261 BC), son of Seleucus I, inherited much of Alexander the Great’s eastern empire. His coinage often blended Macedonian symbols, such as the shield, with new Seleucid emblems like the anchor and elephant. The elephant in particular symbolized military might and the dynasty’s reach into the East.
Even when circulated and worn, these coins retain their strength as historical objects—evoking the martial legacy and ambition of the Seleucid dynasty at its beginning.
