This pendant features a genuine silver tetradrachm of Philip I Philadelphos, struck around 95–75 BC in the final years of the Seleucid Empire. The obverse carries his diademed portrait, while the reverse shows Zeus Nikephoros enthroned, holding a sceptre and a small Victory. The entire scene is encircled by a laurel wreath, a powerful symbol of triumph and divinity. Now hand-set in a custom sterling silver bezel, the coin becomes a wearable testament to the last flickers of Hellenistic kingship.
The History
The Seleucid Empire, carved from Alexander the Great’s conquests, once spanned from the Aegean to India. By the time of Philip I, however, it was a kingdom in decline—fractured by rival dynasts and pressed by rising Roman influence. Coins like this tetradrachm projected continuity of divine kingship even as power slipped away. The laurel wreath, Zeus Nikephoros, and the lofty title “God Manifest, Brother-Loving” all reveal the aspirational grandeur of an empire facing its twilight.
