Campania. Neapolis. Didrachm / Man-headed Bull (310 BCE, silver set) #2

Sale Price:$450.00 Original Price:$650.00
sale

Currently my favorite coin, because if its amazing imagery and perfect size. I cannot find any similar coin pendant online. This coin was purchased from a well-known German coin dealers.

-- Coin information:

Campania, Neapolis Silver Didrachm

Obverse: diademed head of nymph to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; grape bunch behind

Reverse: Man-headed bull walking to right, head facing, being crowned by Nike flying to right above; [NEOΠOΛITHΣ] in exergue

Struck about 320-300 BC

Neapolis, modern-day Naples, located in Southwestern Italy in the region of Campania on the Bay of Naples, an arm of the Tyrrhenian Sea, was founded from Cumae (Cuma) by the Greeks in 650 BC, along the port area, including the little island of Megaris (the Castel dell’Ovo). Further colonists came from Chalcis in Euboea, from Pithecusae (Ischia) beside the Gulf of Cumae, and from Athens. An extension of the city was laid out in a rectangular grid pattern toward the northeast, which was given the name Neapolis. After the city of Neapolis was created, the oldest part of the city became known as Palaiopolis or Palaipolis (Old City). That city was conquered by the Roman general Quintus Publilius Philo about 327/6 BC, after which Neapolis became an ally of the Romans, issuing bronze coins, with legends in Greek, extending help in their hostilities against Pyrrhos of Epeiros (280-275 BC) and against Hannibal in the Second Punic War (218-201 BC).

To appreciate the pendant's size, the relief of the coin and the shape of the bail, see the picture showing the coin next to a US quarter (will post soon). The coin was carefully handled so no damage was done to it and meticulously set in a silver bezel, which was then hammered over the edge of both sides. This was then sanded and polished. This pendant is built to last.

This piece will come with certificate which guarantees authenticity and provides background information (listed above) .

It is impossible for us to know what these fees are so please direct your questions on these matters to your country's customs department. We cannot refund postage on orders that are returned because of customs issues, including refusal to pay customs on the part of the buyer.
