Domitian Gold Aureus Pendant (AD 73) — Set in 18k Gold

$7,800.00

Possibly the only known example of this rare Roman coin set in fine gold jewelry

This pendant features a genuine gold aureus of Domitian, struck in Rome in AD 73, while he was still Caesar under the reign of his father, Emperor Vespasian. The obverse shows Domitian’s laureate portrait, and the reverse presents the young Caesar on horseback, extending his arm in command — a dramatic and uncommon depiction symbolizing imperial authority.

The coin is hand-set in a custom 18k gold bezel, crafted to follow the unique shape of the ancient coin. The bezel was shaped, hammered, and polished to offer secure framing without altering or damaging the relief. Unlike pre-made mounts, this setting was tailored to this exact coin — a balance of respect for its antiquity and wearable elegance.

Extremely Rare Setting

Roman gold aurei are rarely mounted, due to their historical and collector value. After an extensive market search, we found only a handful of aurei set in modern gold jewelry — typically featuring more common emperors like Augustus or Hadrian.

To our knowledge, this is the only known example of this specific Domitian aureus type — with the horseback reverse — set as fine jewelry.

The coin was previously certified by NGC (Strike 5/5, Surface 1/5, noted for edge smoothing and punch mark) and sold via Heritage Auctions (2008, Lot #20084). Full provenance and original certification number included.

Coin Details

  • Emperor: Domitian (as Caesar)

  • Date: AD 73

  • Mint: Rome

  • Obverse: CAES AVG F DOMITIAN COS II — Laureate head right

  • Reverse: Domitian on horseback left, extending right hand and holding scepter

  • Metal: Solid gold (aureus)

  • Grading (past NGC): Choice Fine; Strike: 5/5, Surface: 1/5 (edge smoothing, bent, punch mark)

  • Provenance: Heritage Long Beach Signature Sale 3002 (Lot 20084)

Craftsmanship

The 18k gold bezel was handmade to match the ancient coin’s natural contour. It was hammered and polished around the coin — never glued or altered — preserving both the form and historical integrity. The result is a museum-worthy object, now wearable.

To appreciate scale, detail, and the elegant bail design, refer to the comparison photo with a U.S. quarter (photo coming soon).

What’s Included

  • Hand-set Domitian aureus pendant in 18k gold

  • Certificate of authenticity and coin background

  • Heritage auction provenance reference

  • Jewelry pouch
