Ancient Coin Ring: Trident, dolphin and Cow - Byzantium

$950.00
Sold Out - Please email info@peregrinpendants.com to inquire about a similar pendant.

Besides earrings, another first for us is this bezel set ancient coin ring. I was always hesitant to make rings because often, jewelers would cover up one side of the coin. I bezel set is on both sides so that you can at least see the stunning trident on the back of this coin when you take it off. The front shows a cow on a dolphin and the letter "M".

The ring is a tad over a size 7. It is not easy to measure because it is not completely round (due to the coin)

-- Coin information

Thrace, Byzantion, silver hemidrachm

Obverse: Forepart of cow standing left on dolphin, monogram in left field (M)

Reverse: Ornamented trident head.

Mint: 387 - 340 BC

Byzantion was founded by Greek colonists from Megara in 657 B.C. In 340 B.C., the Byzantines, with the aid of the Athenians, successfully withstood a siege by Philip of Macedon. They were, however, forced to recognize Macedonian suzerainty after surrendering without a fight to Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. The city was rebuilt as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine I in 330 A.D. and renamed Constantinople. It became the capital of the Ottoman Empire when it was conquered in 1453. Today it is Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, and the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart.
