This stunning pendant measures about 14 mm in width and 20 mm from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pendant. See the image with current currency for an indication of its size. The pendant weighs XXXX

Apollonia Pontika, Thrace, silver drachm. Struck around 450-400 BC.

Obverse: upturned anchor; crayfish to left; A to right Reverse: Facing head of Gorgoneion (Attic style) wearing taenia, round face, protruding tongue

Apollonia Pontica was founded as Antheia by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 7th century B.C. They soon changed its name to Apollonia after building a temple for Apollo. The temple contained a colossal statue of Apollo by Calamis, which was later taken to Rome and placed in the Capitol. The anchor on the coinage is evidence of the importance of its maritime trade.
